Founder and General Overseer of Perez Chapel, Bishop Charles Agyin-Asare has indicated that, organised armed group (party militias) of today, can become tomorrow’s rebel groups that will seek to spread their violent and extremist ideologies.
However ,president Akufo-Addo while delivering his State of the Nation Address in Parliament said he had instructed the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to extend an invitation to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to discuss how to disband their respective vigilante groups.
Bishop Agyin-Asare was of the view that, these groups will become difficult and more expensive to disband since they are able to gain influence in the citizenry citing example of what is happening in Burkina Faso where the Government is struggling to control the activities of such violent extremist groups which has develop into inter-communal conflicts, adding that, most of these groups started as vigilante groups seeking to protect their interest.
Addressing the recent alleged audio of the opposition party (NDC) National chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the bishop stated that ’’the recent alleged tape of a very senior opposition party operative threaten a show down of unprecedented tangle between the two leading parties’’.
Adding that as we approach the general 2020 election, leaving the country in no doubt of an impending communal violence if immediate action is not taken.
In conclusion he said, the only solution to deal with illegal party militias is for the police and the military to be given independent and unambiguous authority to deal rootlessly with such illegal groups in order to make their activities highly unattractive.
